HPV typesThe most interesting epidemiological feature of papillomaviruses is the association of genital HPVs with cervical cancer. Most of cervical beningn and malignat tumors worls-wide contain sequences of genital HPVs.

The most prevalent types in cervical carcinoma are the HPV-16 and HPV-18, which encompass as much as 80 % of the cases. On the other hand HPV types 6 and 11 are more commonly found in beningn genital warts (condilomata). Other genital HPV types such as HPV-31, HPV-33 and HPV-35 are also associated to cervical cancer although they are far less common than types 16 and 18.
